Rhythm And Lyrics Speech Recover Stroke Patients

Speech disorder that is often experienced by stroke patients can be treated with singing. No original song of course, but must be chosen songs with lyrics that easily and rhythm more regular so that the effect is optimal.

Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, Germany, has found that the most important in the therapy of singing is the most important rhythm of the song. In addition, song lyrics and simple words strong impact on the ability to speak.

When a stroke damaging areas that play a role in the function of speech in the left hemisphere, patients often have severe difficulty speaking. This condition is known as non-fluent aphasia. Sometimes, the inability to speak is permanent.

Singing is an activity stimulating the thinking while the right brain areas, so there is a presumption that the damaged area is associated with left hemisphere speech functions. Treatment method known as Melodic Intonation Therapy based on this idea.

"But this evidence alone is not enough to explain why singing can be an effective treatment to cope with aphasia," said Benjamin Stahl, a researcher Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences.

To find out how and what kind of influence singing, Stahl and colleagues conducted a study of 17 patients with non-fluent aphasia stroke. They were asked to articulate a few thousand syllables are sung and recited to the accompaniment of rhythmic music or without rhythm. The texts are selected using the same language, but vary in their level of familiarity.

The results were released Medicalxpress.com (09/23/2011) This shows that singing is not the determining factor improvement of a patient's condition. Singing corresponding text does not yield better results than talking but rhythmic.

"A key element in our patient is not in the melody, but rhythm. The biggest positive impact experienced by the deeper areas of the brain, the basal ganglia area. The area is known to be important in processed form a rhythm," says Stahl.

The words or song lyrics also affect the success of therapy in patients with stroke. Lyrics of popular songs and using words that are familiar in everyday life can have a profound effect on perkembagan patient's condition.
